The following is an autobiography by a Jacobs’ Journal staff member.
Hello, my name is Joseph Gutierrez, and I am a second year Sixth college student majoring in structural engineering with a focus on aerospace structures. I am currently on track to graduate by 2023, but I may prolong that to take part in UCSD’s BS/MS program in structural engineering — I’ll wait to make a more concrete decision. Some things I enjoy doing when I’m not worrying about school are watching anime, playing video games, tinkering around with CAD, playing the occasional game of table tennis, and a hobby that I want to pick up again is archery, as the last time I did archery was freshman year of high school.
My main interests in research lie in structural engineering and nuclear engineering. I am extremely interested in both of these fields, with structural engineering being related to the designs of structures all across the world, from bridges, to buildings to aircraft. I gained an interest in structural engineering because of a high school engineering course which introduced me to some CAD programs. Ultimately, this class was what sparked my general interest in engineering, and being able to use CAD to create parts and assemblies for larger structures was what led me down the path of structural engineering. Nuclear engineering has been something I’ve been interested in because I believe nuclear energy can prevent climate change from worsening.
I found Jacob’s Journal through a link on one of my class Discords and I believed this to be a great opportunity to get research experience and to improve my writing skills. I saw this club as a way to get more in-depth research into the topics that I have an interest in and to meet new people who are interested in similar areas of study. I look forward to working with everyone and being able to research areas that interest me.
